Defender® Installer of the Month | October | PestNet UK

Drum roll for October’s Defender Installer of the Month. Its Craig Gouldin at PestNet UK Huge congratulations to you for an installation of our Defender Seagull Spikes, it’s a perfect example of how to install along a parapet wall.

Let's find out a bit about Craig and PestNet UK. Craig has worked in the industry for over 18 years building up his knowledge. He started out working with various other companies gaining experience in the different areas of pest control. He took a particular interest in bird control and that was when he took the leap to work for himself and specialise in bespoke bird deterrent systems. PestNet UK is a true family run business, with his wife and daughter running the admin side of the company. They cover the North of the country from Manchester to Scotland – quite the distance!

Installer of the Month - Craig Gouldin PestNet UK

The job that has won PestNet UK the coveted title of Defender Installer of the Month, was installing Defender Seagull Spikes along a parapet wall. Craig, along with his team member Alan Baines, were contracted to proof a parapet wall from seagulls in collaboration with Eco Environmental Services Ltd. Preventing seagulls from landing on the top of a building's parapet walls will stop the birds from defecating down the front of buildings onto the paths and entrances below. The build-up of bird guano can be a slip hazard and health hazard to the occupants.

The weather was against them at this particular job, so time was of the essence. Luckily Alan was on hand to keep them motivated! Add that to the fact our silicone, Defender® Fixing Silicone is a high tack, fast curing adhesive and the job was completed on time.

To ensure a strong fix, they made sure enough silicone was applied to each strip. The silicone oozes through the locking holes and once cured creates a permanent hold.

Craig and Alan used 3 rows of Defender® Seagull Spikes; the two outside rows have strips installed slightly overlapping the edges to make sure no determined gull can gain a foothold. They have also added a central row, which interlocks the pins to ensure no gull can land, perch or nest on this wall!

We asked Craig what the most challenging aspect of bird work is and as you can imagine, he says the weather can be a huge determining factor in how easily and quickly a job can be completed. The most rewarding part of the job is seeing a project completed to his high expectations and gaining a well-deserved sense of achievement from the finished installation.

We also asked why he chose Defender Bird Spikes and what he liked about them. He said:
‘due to the nature of the project we decided we would require a reliable product and the fast drying glue was a plus with the weather forecast for the job…you were efficient, (with) great communication and speedy delivery.’

Well, we couldn’t get a better recommendation than that!
