Defender® Street Light Spike

The Defender® Street Light Spike uniquely offers up to 1 metre of protection per strip, designed especially to deter seagulls. When installed on a lamp post or street lamp, the half-metre, extra-long wires gently move in the wind, which not only acts as a visual deterrent but also a physical deterrent as gulls do not like anything touching their wings and they will not be able to get near to gain a foothold. The central upright pins along the length of the strip ensure that the birds can not stand in between the long wires, making the street light spike a heavy-weight option for deterring seagulls and pigeons.

Suitable for use on street lights, lamp posts, air conditioning units, flat roofs and boats.

Long Life Expectancy

The Defender® Street Light Spike has a thick UV-stabilised polycarbonate base which will not become brittle, yellow or tarnish. All the pins including the extra long, half a metre pins are made from 304-grade stainless steel which has excellent corrosion-resistant properties and comes with our Defender® 25-Year “No Rust” Warranty when installed in the UK.

Silicone Fixing Holes

Along the base of the spike are 10 cross-shaped holes. When the street lamp spike is pressed onto the top of a light fitting, the Defender® Fixing Silicone pushes through the holes, forming cross-shaped rivets that lock the spike in place. Cable ties can also be used to install the strips onto street lights. If you would prefer and the surface allows, screws or nails can be used as alternatives to glue.

Snappable Sections

Along the underside of the base there are 4 grooves, which can be snapped by hand to create 5 shorter lengths. Each length measures 6.5 cm, which means smaller ledges and uneven surfaces can be securely protected from persistent pigeons and birds.

Defender® Street Light Spike - Key Info

Which birds are deterred by the Street Light Spike?

  • Seagulls
  • Pigeons

Defender® Street Light Spike is a single strip ideal for use as a stand-alone bird deterrent. It has 10 integral extra-long wires, 5 on each side of the strip, each over half a metre long These wires move gently in the wind, making not only a visual deterrent for birds but also a physical deterrent as seagulls do not like anything touching their wings. There are also 20 central pins arranged in 4 fanned-out rows to stop the most determined gull from standing among the wires.

Where can I use the Defender® Street Light Spike?

This spike is the perfect solution for street lights, lamp posts and air conditioning units. The extra-long wires should be allowed to hang down at either side and move freely. Due to the size of a lamp post or street light, and the fact that the coverage of this spike is huge, generally only 1 strip is required.

How do Street Light Spikes work?

Although it looks aggressive, this spike is a humane seagull deterrent. The long spike wires work by visually deterring birds as well as physically repelling them so they can not get near the installation area to get a foot hold. In addition, the 20 central pins which stop any bird from trying to come in from above and standing in the centre of the spike.

How to install Defender® Street Light Spikes

Defender® Street Light Spike - Installation Guide

Please be aware that some street lights have casing made from polyethylene or polypropylene and silicone will not stick to these surfaces. Always install a test piece for a minimum of 48 hours first to ensure a strong adhesion. Street Light spikes can also be installed using cable ties or screws.

Step 1 – Clean the top: It is essential to clean the top of the light before siliconing the Steet Light Spike into position. This will ensure the silicone will stick to the top rather than to the debris and guano left on the top. Damp down the area first, preferably using a disinfectant spray like Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray to ensure no dust is breathed in while brushing the debris off the top into a suitable container. Once clean allow to dry fully before starting installation.

Step 2 – Snap to size: For the top of a sign or lamp post, the spike strip can be snapped into smaller pieces to fit exactly. There are 4 grooves along the bottom, which can be simply snapped by hand.

Step 3 – Fixing methods: We always recommend using our Defender® fixing silicone when installing Defender® bird spikes, this silicone has been tried and tested to ensure a strong fix to the polycarbonate base of the spikes and to the surface. However, if installing on a street lamp, test a piece first. Some street lights or lamp posts are made from polyethylene and polypropylene to which no silicones will adhere. In this case, cable tie or screw the spikes into position.

Step 4 – Silicone: A caulking gun is required to apply the Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone to the base of the lamp spike. Squeeze liberally along the entire base, then push down onto the surface allowing the silicone to ooze through the silicone locking holes.

Step 5 – Positioning: On the top of a street light, position the spike centrally down the centre of the light, allowing the long wires to freely hang to either side.

It is always important to check the suitability of the surface for use with Defender® Silicone. For more information, please visit the product page Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone If you are unsure, call us on 01626 835055 and we will happily advise. If you require a caulking gun we have them available to buy and we have a guide on if you haven't used one before.
