Defender® Installer of the Month | November | Apex Pest Control

Introducing our November winner of our Defender® Installer of the Month for 2024 – it Tom Johnson from Apex Pest Control. Congratulations to Tom for his installation using Defender® Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spikes.

Apex Pest Control is a true family-owned business by a father and son team. Tony, Tom's dad has been working in the pest control industry for over 30 years when nearly 10 years ago he decided to move back to his home town of Sheffield and start up Apex Pest Control. Tom joined his father a few years later and the dream team that is Apex was formed. They cover the South and West of Yorkshire from North Derbyshire, Rotherham, Barnsley, Leeds and of course Sheffield.

Tom and Tony cover all aspects of pest control from insects and bugs, rodents and mammals to bird control, catering for domestic homeowners, commercial premises such as restaurants to agricultural and forestry clients.

The install that won Apex this prestigious trophy was work carried out for one of their existing service contract clients. Pigeons had started roosting on air conditioning units on the side of the building; these birds would, in turn, foul over the equipment and air ducts connecting the units. The resident birds would also foul over the staff and client's cars that were parked on site. This fouling is also a health concern to anyone that comes into contact with the droppings and creates slip hazards on the paths below.

Apex Pest Control first cleaned the area of all traces of pigeons, feathers, nesting debris and guano. They used the Defender® Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spike and our specialist Defender® Fixing Silicone to install, ensuring the area is protected from pigeons perching and roosting for years to come. The spikes on the air duct pipes have angled pins which stop any returning birds from landing back on these pipes. They installed 2 rows of spikes on the ledges and on top of the air conditioning units. The front row stops pigeons from gaining a foot hold back onto the ledge and the row behind stops the birds from scrabbling over the front row and nesting behind. The rows have been perfectly installed to slightly overlap creating an impenetrable mat of spikes.

Tom finds the most rewarding part of his job is helping customers solve their problems no matter the size. This could be from a small domestic rodent job or a large bird proofing installation for a commercial client. As Tom says:

"As with all bird work it’s really rewarding to see a clean site after the install and see the instant results from the proofing."
