October’s winner of Defender® Bird Spike Installer of the Month is MJR Pest Control. Huge congratulations to the MJR team. So who is this winning team and what do they do? Let’s find out!

MJR Pest Control is a family-run business made up of Dad Mick and his son Billy. Mick has always had an interest in pest control since he was very young – haven’t we all! He got into pest management as a profession in 2015 and once Billy left school at 16 in 2019 he joined his dad in the business. Billy passed his Level 2 Pest Management within a year and together with Mick continue to learn and expand on their already expansive knowledge. They hold all the relevant qualifications and certifications, keep up to date with all the various legislation, complete training courses provided by industry experts, pass exams with flying colours and have joined all the professional bodies in the industry. Boy do these guys love learning!

MJR Pest Control can help sort out any pest problem whether it’s a rat, mice, moles, squirrels, wasps, bedbugs, fleas, cockroaches, flies, clothes moths, carpet beetles, a pigeon, seagulls or bird issues and the list goes on! Most of their rodent and insect jobs are in West Yorkshire but when it comes to bird control they cover all of Yorkshire and have been known to go further afield.

The fab install that won MJR Octobers Award was for an installation of our Defender® Wide Steel Spike on a Marks & Spenser unit in Barnsley. As we all know, pigeons will create an unhygienic mess through droppings and nesting material wherever they perch. For a commercial business that looks after its staff and receives customers, this is far from ideal. M&S was looking for a humane, effective and long-lasting solution and contacted MJR. Mick and Billy installed Defender® Wide Steel Bird Spikes along the front edge of the units roof, slightly overhanging the leading edge so becoming both a visual and physical deterrent to pigeons. The birds literally cannot gain a foothold on the front edge and therefore will abandon the unit to find an easier place to perch. From the ground, this install is barely visible to customers and staff who can now come and go free from birds and their associated mess. But MJR Pest Control doesn’t stop there, they provide ongoing maintenance to ensure the continued effectiveness of their bird control installations.

We asked Mick what his strangest and funniest job was and it’s the perfect story for Octobers winner and Halloween: “We were once called in to a funeral directors/chapel of rest and when we went into the back room they had coffins lined up against the wall and I was winding Billy up saying I could hear tapping noises and voices. He soon left and wouldn’t go back in so it backfired on me as I had to finish off the work on my own which was very twitching if I’m honest!” We think this is a 'dead' funny story!
