Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes - Key Info
Which birds are the chimney pot spikes suitable for?
This easy-to-use Defender® Chimney Spike has been made to stop seagulls and pigeons from being able to nest, roost or perch on an open chimney pot. A high vantage point like a chimney offers a safe location, away from predators and offers a good viewing point to source food. It is essential to protect the area around the chimney stack with seagull or pigeon spikes as well to fully protect the area.
What sort of pots will the chimney pot spikes fit?
The Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes are made from a flexible stainless steel strap and can fit any shape pot. The pliable strap simply bends to the shape of your chimney pot. Simply pull the strap tight around the pot and hook the spring into one of the fixing holes. The maximum circumference of the chimney strap fits is 107 cm (42 inches). The strap has a spring locking clip and serrated edge, meaning it achieves a strong, tight hold without slippage. Once firmly in place, it stops seagulls, pigeons and birds from being able to nest, perch or roost instantly. If your chimney pot has a curved hood covering the aperture, the Defender® Curved Ridge Spike 'Anti-Topple' System is the perfect deterrent for both seagulls and pigeons.
How do chimney spikes stop birds landing?
This seagull and bird deterrent for chimneys is a completely humane form of bird control. Although the spikes may seem a little aggressive, the birds will rarely touch them once they have been installed. The spikes act as a gull and pigeon deterrent, stopping the birds from being able to land, on that particular area. Even if they do attempt to land the spikes make it uncomfortable without causing injury, and the birds or seagulls will give up and find an easier roosting site. To ensure your rooftop is completely gull and pigeon free, use in conjunction with the Defender® Ridge Spike which is simply siliconed to the top of your roof's ridge tiles.

How to install Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes
The Defender® Chimney Pot Spike is an incredibly simple solution to stop pigeons and seagulls from perching or even nesting on open chimney pots. No extra tools are needed to fix the chimney strap to the pot, it comes as a complete unit, ready to install and it is good to go in seconds.
Step 1 – Safety: Your safety is paramount. Please ensure you can safely reach your chimney pots without endangering yourself or others. If you have any doubt, it would be best to engage the services of someone who is used to working at height, such as builders and roofers.
Step 2 – Removal: Remove any traces of old abandoned nests that might be blocking the chimney pot and potentially become a fire hazard if left in place.
Step 3 – Install: Open out the strap to its full length of 107 cm. The base of the pins are pre-bent slightly outwards, this is to accommodate any moulding that can often be seen around the rim of the chimney pot. Position the strap just below this and the lip will sit within the bend in the spike. If the chimney pot has no moulding or lip, position the strap about 5 cm below the top so the straight part of the pins sit on the top of the rim.
Step 4 – Fastening: Hold the flat end still against the pot, and pull the end with the spring around. Pull tight and simply hook the end of the spring into the nearest hole along the strap. This will hold the Defender® Chimney Pot Strap in place.
Step 5 – Sizing: If the chimney pot that needs proofing is smaller than the 107 cm circumference, the Defender® Chimney pot strap does not need to be shortened. It simply wraps around and overlaps itself. There are spring fixing holes every 5 cm along the whole length of the strap. If the chimney pot is particularly large, 2 straps can be joined together using the same spring fixing system. The base is very flexible so will even fit shaped pots, such as ornate medieval-style pots or the corners of square chimney pots.
